Malta’s caves
There are many places of interest to see in Malta. Because of its location, it offers many beautiful beaches but also many cultural places ‘thanks’ to the invasion it had in the past. But Malta is also a country where we can visit 7 caves thanks to the nature it owns.
The most known cave is certainly the ‘Blue Grotto’, situated next to Wied iz-Zurrieq. This actually the name of several sea caverns. The fame of the Blue Grotto comes from its beauty when the sun shines through it, and from the fauna and flora there is to see around the caverns. By the way, the water often changes colour due to the sun reflexions. Moreover, the town in itself is a lovely place to eat in delicious restaurants by the sea with a stunning view, and this is a really nice place to practice scuba-diving too.
The Ghar Dalam cave, or Darkness cave, is a really interesting one because it is where many dinosaur skeletons were discovered in 1885. The also discovered there some human’s teeth dating from the Neolithic. Another research found painted figures like human’ hands or old extinct animals. Unfortunately, some of the ‘treasures’ they found into the cave where stolen or damaged, but you can still visit the 50 first meters of it and discover the history of Malta.
The third nice cave to see in Malta is a small underground cave in Xaghra, the Xerri’s Grotto, that served as shelter for the people living in the house next to it during the World War II. It has stalactites and stalagmites that forms a great view.
